Dear Beaumont Families,

I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow at Beaumont’s Grounds Cleanup, in honor of Earth Day. Rain and sun on the same day; these are all signs of spring at Beaumont Middle School. There are still lots of important things to learn and master during 4th quarter, so we are making every day count. Please continue to support your student staying focused; check their planners and homework assignments.

We have completed the first rounds of statewide assessments in reading, math and science for our 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. Final results will come to families in the mail over the summer. These assessments are one tool to look at student growth, as well as EdBox and report cards. We are very proud of our students and their hard work this year. Each of us must support our students ending the year academically strong. You should see your student doing homework every single evening.

This is the time when the PTA, Foundation and Site Council are looking for new members. Please give of your time to support these very important roles in our school. Remember that student success is directly tied to parent involvement.

Staffing Time for 2013-14…

It is that time in the year when we begin the staff process for next fall. Staffing allocations are based on the Superintendent and School Board’s approved budget. Beaumont given our projected enrollment will be holding steady. Staffing is a complicated process that takes thoughtful, creative and logical planning. My goal is to continue to provide a robust and rigorous academic experience for all students. I also take into consideration teachers’ professional licensure and personal requests. The staff and Site Council members have also given us input this spring.

Although the State of Oregon increased the State-Wide Education budget, it does not fully make up for one-time school staffing resources. Additionally, Ratios also increase through (1) Shifting Allocations between schools, allocating less by Ratio and more by Equity (5% to 8%), (2) allocating 20.25 FTE to Focus and Priority Schools (3) HS for School-Wide Support increases.
The middle school staff ratio increased from 24.24:1 to 25.25:1 for 2013-14.

Ms. Vimegnon, the Assistant Principal, a committee of staff members and I will be working on staffing and the schedule for the next two weeks. The Transfer and Enrollment Lottery runs this week, which may impact our final student enrollment. We will communicate with families as soon as the staffing and schedule are finalized.

Looking forward to seeing you soon,
Elizabeth Casson-Taylor
Beaumont Principal

Principal's Message

Dear Beaumont Families;

I hope you are having an incredible summer break with your children.  Oregon is the best place to be during the months of July and August.  Many of our students talked about going to camps, visiting relatives and heading to places they had never been before.  The Beaumont School office is now closed, reopening on August 20thfor registration. The office staff will return on August 12thin preparation of the 2013-14 School Year.

As the staff left in June we came up with the idea to create a School Climate Committee next year made up of staff and parents.  The goals of this committee will be to support our students having an environment in which they have a voice about respect every day in every classroom.

The Administrative team met and created a list of ideas for building a stronger safe and civil community here at Beaumont.  A few of the ideas are:

·         Grade Level Assemblies focused on AASABE (Academic Achievement Situationally Appropriate Behavior Everyone)

·         An AASABE contract for every student signed by the student and parents.

·         A Student Council, elected by peers.

·         Community Building Activities such as a 6thgrade/staff kickball game and a 7thgrade volleyball/staff game to allow students to get to know staff they may not have yet.

·         Six members of the staff are attending Restorative Justice training in August.  This approach provides a different way of holding students accountable to the school community they live in.

I want you each to know that we respect your ideas and relish your input into what else we as a staff can do to help you know your students are in a positive and inclusive environment. It will take all of us working together to get the message out that being mean is not cool, it hurts! Being kind and having a strong voice is where it’s at.

We are ready to listen to you…

Enjoy and see you soon,

Elizabeth Casson-Taylor

CONNECT STUDENTS WITH PTA CLOTHING CENTER STARTING AUGUST 26
The PTA Clothing Center will open for students to receive clothing from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the week of August 26-29.

Each student must have an application. They are allowed to visit the clothing center two times during the school year -- once before winter break and once after winter break. Go to:
http://www.pps.k12.or.us/families/6269.htm for the application and further information.
When school begins, the program will return to routine hours, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Mondays and Thursdays. Since 1964, the PTA Clothing Center, housed in the Marshall building at 3905 S.E. 91st Ave., has given age-appropriate clothing to children in Portland Public Schools.
By caring for the basic needs of youth and allowing them to dress as their peers, the center encourages positive self-esteem, academic success and regular class attendance. Last school year, the center provided 2,025 PPS students with clothing and shoes. Donated cardboard barrels will be available to collect donations at schools in September.
Questions? Contact Sharon Meigh-Chang, PTA Clothing Center director, at 503.293.0783, or ptaclothingcenter@comcast.net.
